Technical Data
Introduced: 1946
Number built: 130 (10 built by the LMS, the remainder being built by British Railways)
Wheel arrangement: 2-6-2T
Number built: 130 (10 built by the LMS, the remainder being built by British Railways)
Wheel arrangement: 2-6-2T
Prior to this design, the LMS 2-6-2 tank locomotives had tended to be not as successful as the 2-6-4T designs. Ivatt's design of this wheel arrangement was perhaps the most successful of the LMS 2-6-2T locomotives, and would prove to be just as good as the tender version.
Like the 2-6-0 design, the emphasis was on ease of use and maintenance, and the locomotives found themselves across the regions of British Railways, particularly the Southern Region. Again the design would undergo modifications throughout the production run
