Stanier Class 5F

LMS Class 5F no. 13268 at Highley, Severn Valley Railway. The numbering represents the original numbering sequence applied to the locomotives
Technical Data
No. Built: 40
Introduced: 1933
Wheel arrangement: 2-6-0
In 1933, the LMS decided it needed 40 more locomotives of the 5F 2-6-0 type previously built under Henry Fowler. At this point William Stanier had just taken over the post of Chief Mechanical Engineer, and the previous design was modified further, most notably with horizontal cylinders as opposed to the angled ones of the original design. The early designs featured a Great Western Railway-style safety valve cover, which Stanier ordered removed, partly because he didn't want to copy GWR practice, and partly due to gauging issues on some parts of the LMS (the safety valves would be further modified more in line with standard LMS practice as the locomotives were constructed).
The class was built between 1933 and 1934. The production run was not extended beyond the original requirement, most likely because Stanier's Class 5MT "Black Fives" proved to be a better design. The locomotives would be renumbered later by the LMS as 2945-2984, with 40000 being added by British Railways at Nationalisation.
